Mariam, who was born in Songea in the south of Tanzania in 1998, is one of our scholarship years 2014 and 2015. Together with her six siblings, she grew up with her mother since her father died in 2008. As a farmer with seven children, her mother could not afford the school fees for all the children, so Mariam turned to Kipaji. Mariam goes to the Emmaberg Girls Secondary School to gain knowledge and skills. Education means for them to turn their backs on ignorance and to gain control of their own life and that of their family through knowledge. As the first-born, Mariam not only takes on a great deal of responsibility in the family, but also aims to bring society forward.
